PURPOSE: The International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People is observed by the United Nations on or around 29 November each year, in accordance with United Nations General Assembly mandates contained in resolutions 32/40 B of 2 December 1977, 34/65 D of 12 December 1979, and subsequent resolutions adopted under agenda item “Question of Palestine.” The Day provides an opportunity for the international community to focus its attention on the fact that the question of Palestine remains unresolved and that the Palestinian people have yet to attain their inalienable rights as defined by the General Assembly, namely, the right to self-determination without external interference, the right to national independence and sovereignty, and the right to return to their homes and property, from which they have been displaced.

This year; The Solidarity Day provides an opportunity to refocus our attention on the fact that the question of Palestine remains unresolved and that the Palestinian people are not yet able to attain their inalienable rights, namely, the right to self-determination, the right to national independence and sovereignty and the right of return of the refugees. EVENTS: As customary, in accordance with General Assembly resolution 32/40 B of 2 December 1977, the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People 2023 will be marked by the CEIRPP in a Special Meeting where United Nations Members States express their solidarity with the Palestinian people, through messages by Heads of States and Government. This year the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP) will hold a Special Meeting to commemorate the International Day for Solidarity with the Palestinian People 2023 from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm EST in the ECOSOC Chamber at UNHQ in New York. Read the Concept note and watch the commemorative event.

Several Events to commemorate the Solidarity Day will also be held at other United Nations venues worldwide.

  • PLENARY SESSIONS: On November 28th; from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm EST will be held the United Nations General Assembly consideration of the question of Palestine.

  • EXHIBIT: On November 29th; at 13:00 pm - 18:00 pm EST in the General Assembly Visitors’ Lobby, the CEIRPP will inaugurate an exhibit titled “Palestine: A Land with a People.” The exhibit contains photographs, video and art depicting different episodes in the Palestinian journey before, during, and after the Nakba (“catastrophe” in Arabic), when more than half of the Palestinian population were forced from or fled their homes during violence and war from 1947 to 1949.

2023 marks the 75th anniversary of the mass displacement of Palestinians known as “the Nakba” or “the Catastrophe”. The United Nations Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People (CEIRPP) commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Nakba at UNHQ in New York. PUBLICATION: This study also underscores the pressing need for a just and lasting resolution based on international law of the Question of Palestine in all its aspects. It highlights the imperative of upholding the principles of international law, including respect for human rights, selfdetermination and the prohibition of the acquisition of territory by force. Such an understanding is crucial for fostering a conducive environment that paves the way for the end of the Israeli occupation and the realization of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people. On May 15th, 2023; A Special Commemorative Event was held in the General Assembly Hall in the evening. The event brought to life the Palestinian journey and aimed at creating an immersive experience of the Nakba through live music, photos, videos, and personal testimonies. This was an occasion to highlight that the noble goals of justice and peace, require recognizing the reality and history of the Palestinian people’s plight and ensuring the fulfillment of their inalienable rights.

In 1977, the United Nations General Assembly called for the annual observance of November 29th as the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People (resolution 32/40 B). On that day, in 1947, the Assembly adopted the resolution on the partition of Palestine (resolution 181 (II)) In resolution 60/37 of 1 December 2005, the Assembly requested the Committee on the Exercise of the Inalienable Rights of the Palestinian People and the Division for Palestinian Rights, as part of the observance of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People on 29 November, to continue to organize an annual exhibit on Palestinian rights or a cultural event in cooperation with the Permanent Observer Mission of Palestine to the UN.

  • Adopt the principles International Humanitarian laws

  • Ensure that the civilian population in the Gaza Strip received food, medicines and other humanitarian necessities.

  • Encourage Member States to continue to give the widest support and publicity to the observance of the Day of Solidarity.

  • Organize a cultural event or an annual exhibit on Palestinian rights.
